چکیده

Today’s wireless networks are highly heterogeneous, with mobile devices consisting of multiple wireless network interfaces (WNICs). Since battery lifetime is limited, power management of the interfaces has become essential. We develop an integrated approach for the management of power and performance of mobile devices in heterogeneous wireless environments. Our policy decides which WNIC to employ for a given application and optimizes its usage based on the current power and performance needs of the system. The policy dynamically switches between WNICs during program execution if data communication requirements and/or network conditions change. We have experimentally characterized Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless interfaces. Our policy has been implemented on HP’s IPAQ portable device communicating with HP’s HotSpot server [14]. The applications we tested range from MPEG video to email. The results show that our policy offers a large improvement in power savings as compared to singly using 802.11b or Bluetooth while enhancing performance.

A novel key management scheme for heterogeneous sensor networks based on the position of nodes

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have many applications in the areas of commercial, military and environmental requirements. Regarding the deployment of low cost sensor nodes with restricted energy resources, these networks face a lot of security challenges. A basic approach for preparing a secure wireless communication in WSNs, is to propose an efficient cryptographic key management protocol be...

An efficient non-repudiation billing protocol in heterogeneous 3G-WLAN networks

The wireless communication with delivering variety of services to users is growing rapidly in recent years. The third generation of cellular networks (3G), and local wireless networks (WLAN) are the two widely used technologies in wireless networks. 3G networks have the capability of covering a vast area; while, WLAN networks provide higher transmission rates with less coverage. Since the two n...

LEBRP - A Lightweight and Energy Balancing Routing Protocol for Energy-Constrained Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

A wireless ad hoc network typically refers to any set of wireless networks where all devices have equal status on a network and are free to associate with any other wireless ad hoc network devices in their range. As the nature of these networks, they commonly do not have external power supplies, and each node has a limited internal power source. In this paper, we put forward a new routing proto...

A Comprehensive Survey on RAT Selection Algorithms for Heterogeneous Networks

Due to the coexistence of different Radio Access Technologies (RATs), Next Generation Wireless Networks (NGWN) are predicted to be heterogeneous in nature. The coexistence of different RATs requires a need for Common Radio Resource Management (CRRM) to support the provision of Quality of Service (QoS) and the efficient utilization of radio resources. RAT selection algorithms are part of the CRR...

The Role of Regulatory in Price Control and Spectrum Allocation to Competing Wireless Access Networks

With the rapid growth of wireless access networks, various providers offer their services using different technologies such as Wi-Fi, Wimax, 3G, 4G and so on. These networks compete for the scarce wireless spectrum. The spectrum is considered to be a scarce resource moderated by the spectrum allocation regulatory (“regulatory” for short) which is the governance body aiming to maximize the socia...
